About Us

It all began with a weekend's diving trip. Gary & Zoe Steenvoorden, originally from Lincolnshire, were instantly hooked on everything the area around St Abbs & Eyemouth has to offer; fantastic scenic walks, an amazing coastline, and especially the Scuba Diving. As frequent visitors to the area the couple subsequently made many good friends and enjoyed many happy times.

Their first aim of buying a “holiday home," soon grew to a bigger passion, a dream of living and working in the place they felt most comfortable. After a lot of searching for a suitable property to run as their own Bed & Breakfast accommodation, The Home Arms, most recently a former pub with letting rooms, came on the market. The old Home Arms had been closed and empty for over a year and needed extensive modernisation. Zoe recalls "It was in quite a state, but as we walked around the empty rooms and were captivated by the building and its breathtaking views out to sea. We could feel this would make our perfect dream place."

As divers themselves, Gary & Zoe could see that The Home Arms would make an ideal place for visiting dive groups to stay. Extra facilities such as a drying room, an equipment store, and a comfortable lounge in which to relax were carefully planned out.

Gary & Zoe set about the huge task of painstaking restoration and renovation of the large building to create "The Home Arms Guest House" - a modern luxury Bed and Breakfast offering the highest levels of comfort and personal service. As Gary explains, "The goal is to create a place with personality, a home from home for people to relax and experience all the fantastic adventures that the area has to offer."

What Gary didn't know at the time, was that during that first viewing Zoe had already hatched a plan to transform some of the street level rooms into her very own hair salon - The Hair Bar. What Zoe didn't know back then was that Gary was also thinking..... about buying a boat.

The Home Arms has become well established and is now rated No.1 as the best place to stay in Eyemouth and the Scottish Borders region and in the top 3% of all places to stay in the UK. Zoe also oversees the running of the busy salon. The boat is called Wavedancer II. Gary also serves as a retained fire-fighter where he gets to drive the fire engine. There’s also been an addition to the family. Millie-Jo is in charge of, well, everything. Apparently she has been thinking..... about buying a castle!

Gary & Zoe are always happy to chat with anyone organising where to stay in Eyemouth. If they can help or if you have any questions, please contact The Home Arms by email or Telephone 018907 51316
